So, an idiom can be an expression, phrase or even a word which has a figurative meaning. Idioms are supposed to be figure of speech, it means, word and/or words diverting of the literal meaning.
For example: Let your hair down!
Looking at this sentence literally, it could be a common sentence. This idiom arose in 17th century because in that period women used to hold and to put scarf on their hair all day long. Then, they just let the hair down when they wanted to relax. I presume to be with the hair held all day long must not have been easy! So, the meaning of it is relax, to be carefree!
Ex:
- It's nice to let your har down in a while.
- So come on, let you hair down and have fun time!
Any questions?!
Hope you understood my first explication! Let your hair down and enjoy the rest of your day! ; )
