"To get the hang of doing something" means to get the way to do something or to understand the technique of doing something. 

For example: 

Three weeks ago I took up a painting course. Before that I had never tried something similar. The showing of the materials and techniques were completely new for me. Now I am more adapted to that and I got the hang of painting!
