Put someone away means to confine someone in a psychiatric hospital or some place isolated.
It is also common to say that someone is put away.
For example: Liz has been put away in a clinic for several months and her relatives can already see her mental progress.
However, when you say to put something away means both to save money for a future use and to eat so much.
For example: She has been put her extra money away, so she can travel to LA.
